I just saw a behind-the-scenes clip with Jackson Rathbone, who is playing Sokka in the movie.
And he can't pronounce his own characters name.
Now, I understand that it looks like it should be pronounced "Sohka", and I've seen some discussion on boards and things that fans are overreacting. But really, if you're going to be playing a charater originally from a fairly popular television show, with a pretty active fanbase, with not only the ability to look up clips on Youtube, but also access to the show itself (via DVDs and whatnot), it's not unreasonable for the fans to ask that you SAY YOUR OWN CHARACTERS NAME CORRECTLY. And even if you never looked any of those things up, didn't they say what role you were going to play at some point during the auditioning process (or whatever it is he went through to get the part)? I don't see how they could have avoided it. So really, you're just a failure, and you have no excuse.
I don't really know anything about the actual show but I know the director for the movie made weird decisions on how he wants the names to be pronounced in an Indian way or sumtin. I kno nuthin.
ReplyDeleteWe'll see in the movie, which comes out tomorrow.
ReplyDelete(Sadly, my sister and I are only going to see this because we're hoping they'll make a fourth season of the television show if they make enough money on the movie. And kind of because of my morbid curiosity as to what they're going to do to it.)
Yeah, they've decided to pronounce stuff the Hindi way. But it's not consistant because in Hindi it's not Avatar, it's Ahvehter.
ReplyDeleteBut why would you do that? I just feel like the whole thing is supposed to be a mix of all cultures - Indian, Tibetan, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, etc. So it's almost defeating the way the show goes about everything to make it all reflect one culture - because that's the thing, their NOT supposed to be one culture, they're different. It's why they have the different bending. It's just...bleh and stupid and annoying.
